How to tell if someone is reading your WhatsApp (and what to do without putting yourself at risk)
In short: if someone knows what you have written on WhatsApp, the usual cause is not spyware but WhatsApp Web open on another device. You can check in a minute: Settings → Linked devices. If there is one you don’t recognise, someone is reading your chats. Before you log it out, think about your safety: if you live with him, he will notice. Talk to a specialist domestic abuse service first.
Signs that may make you suspicious
- He knows what you have written or who you have talked to, without you telling him.
- Messages are marked as read that you haven’t opened.
- Sent messages appear that you didn’t write.
- Your phone has been in his hands, even for a minute: linking a device only takes scanning a code with your phone.
How to check in a minute
- Android: open WhatsApp, tap the three dots at the top → Linked devices.
- iPhone: WhatsApp → Settings → Linked devices.
- You will see every device connected to your account (a browser, a computer, a tablet) and when it was last active. If one of them isn’t yours, that person is reading your chats in real time.
- A linked device receives your messages even when your phone is off or far away: he doesn’t need to touch it again.
Menu names vary a little between WhatsApp versions, but it is always called something like “Linked devices”.
Other ways to read your WhatsApp
- Lock screen notifications: if your phone is near him, he can read messages without unlocking it. Hide message previews in your phone’s notification settings.
- Your backup: a Google Drive or iCloud backup is only protected by that account’s password. Turn on the end-to-end encrypted backup in WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup.
- Spyware with accessibility permissions can read everything on your screen. Here is how to check: how to tell if there is spyware on your phone.
If you find a device that isn’t yours
- Don’t log it out straight away if you live with him or he watches you closely. His WhatsApp Web will disconnect, he will notice and know you have found out. A specialist service can help you decide when and how.
- Take a screenshot of the device list, with the date. And don’t delete conversations: they can be evidence.
- In the meantime, use another device for sensitive conversations: a friend’s or a work phone.
When it is safe, shut it all down
- Log out the unknown device: tap it in the list → Log out.
- Turn on two-step verification (Settings → Account): a six-digit PIN that stops anyone registering your number on another phone.
- Turn on WhatsApp’s app lock with your fingerprint or face (Settings → Privacy), and change your phone’s unlock code if he knows it.
And Silncy?
Silncy doesn’t protect your WhatsApp. It does something else: if you are in danger, it alerts your trusted contacts with your location with a single press, without taking out your phone or typing anything. If you are experiencing domestic abuse, several European countries also offer an official, free alarm device: we explain it in panic buttons for women facing domestic abuse. And if he also knows where you are, read how to tell if someone has hidden a tracker on you.

FAQ
If I log out WhatsApp Web, will he know?
Yes: he will see that his WhatsApp Web has disconnected. That is why, if you live with him or he watches you closely, you should make a plan with a specialist service first.
Can someone read my WhatsApp without touching my phone?
Linking a new device needs your phone for a moment. Without access to your phone it is much harder, unless he has your backup or has installed spyware.
What is two-step verification?
A six-digit PIN that WhatsApp asks for from time to time. It stops anyone activating your number on another phone, even if they get the SMS code.
Is it a crime to read my WhatsApp?
Reading someone else’s messages without permission is illegal across Europe, and from a partner or ex-partner it is a form of domestic abuse. Keep the evidence and report it.
